Morocco, a land of many colours

Last year, during the winter, I decided to go looking for a little warmth in a country of North Africa.

The charm of this continent is always unique: its colours and landscapes stir the emotions and leave indelible memories. Morocco lies in north-western Africa, facing the Mediterranean and, for the most part, the Atlantic Ocean.

It is certainly a modern country: its cities are highly developed, with contemporary buildings. The inland towns are without doubt more characteristic and more old-fashioned.

Cities like Rabat and Fez are very distinctive, and the medina of Fez is truly hard to forget, as is the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean: a real jewel. Marrakech, on the other hand, has a more Western feel, with buildings in terracotta tones and modern architecture. Here I visited the Royal Palace, decidedly crowded but very interesting. We would have liked to visit the Majorelle Garden too, which everyone describes as splendid, but we couldn't. A perfect reason to come back!

Also worth mentioning is the visit to the archaeological site of the ancient city of Volubilis, which reached its height during the period when it was part of the Roman Empire. It is famous above all for its well-preserved mosaic floors.

Among the main dishes of Moroccan cuisine are couscous — especially good in the version with vegetables — and tagine, with its more spiced flavour. Not to be missed are the honey sweets, the dates and the traditional mint tea.

The spices and argan oil are of excellent quality, well worth stocking up on. The carpets, too, are beautiful and full of colour!

In seven days I was able to admire only the main cities, but there is still so much more I would like to see, both inland and along the coast — and, why not, take a lovely hot-air balloon ride. I saw many of them at dawn, colouring the skies of this wonderful country.
